There is a wide variety of prey that these ravenous predators hunt down, so fishing lure companies have to cover a lot of area when creating artificial fishing lures. They have to take into consideration where the fish will be at certain times of day, how fish behave in certain weather conditions, how fish behave certain times of year, the colour of the prey the fish go after, among other things.

As probably expected, topwater lures float and are fished along the surface of the water. The majority of the surface or topwater baits have lips or cupped heads so that they could generate a splashing or popping sound. The surface sounds will entice bass from great distances.

Generally, topwaters are cast near some sort of cover where the bass love to hide and wait for prey. You then pull the lure with quick jerks, followed by a short pause to create the desired sound. Most of the senses come into play here, not only do you feel the bite, you can see and hear it as well! More often that note, the bass will jump clear out of the water.

The best times for topwaters are in the early mornings and evenings. They are most effective in shallow waters.
